Iowa Cubs

The Iowa Cubs were yipped to death by the El Paso Chihuahuas (Padres), 4-3.

Starter Duane Underwood gave up four runs in the first inning and that was all El Paso would need. Underwood and three relievers shut El Paso down the rest of the way, but Iowa’s comeback fell short. The final line on Underwood was four runs on three hits and four walks over five innings. He struck out ten.

Third baseman Chesny Young was 2 for 4 with a two-run single in the second inning.

Tennessee Smokies

The Tennessee Smokies were subjugated by the Birmingham Barons, 6-3 in ten innings.

Starter Oscar De La Cruz allowed three runs on four hits over six innings. De La Cruz walked one and struck out six. He did hit one batter.

The loss went to Tommy Nance, who had the honor of pitching the tenth inning with a runner starting on second base. He walked the bases loaded and then gave up a two-run double before he was removed.
