2017 Cubs victories revisited, May 9: Cubs 8, Rockies 1

It took all day, but the Cubs finally beat the Rockies.

After the Cubs defeated the Phillies May 4, they lost four in a row and looked bad doing it, including being swept by the Yankees on a frigid weekend at Wrigley. Then they suffered through a snow-out of their first scheduled game in Denver, forcing a doubleheader vs. the Rockies. The first-game loss was the fourth straight, then they beat the Rox behind John Lackey in Game 2. They were 17-16, in third place, 1½ games out of first place in the N.L. Central, following this win.

Raise your hand if you predicted that John Lackey would be the first Cubs starter to throw seven shutout innings with 10 strikeouts in 2017.

I don’t see any hands, and I shouldn’t, because you didn’t. (Jon Lester also has thrown seven shutout innings this year, but he struck out just three in that outing.)

Lackey was outstanding, just what the Cubs needed to end their four-game losing streak. Javier Baez and Kris Bryant homered in an 8-1 win over the Rockies. Just how outstanding was Lackey?
